What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the shedding of bone mass within the body. In the long-term this may result in fractures, loss of weight, chronic back pain and dowager's hump.

 

Causes.

By the age of 75 one-in-five Australian women will suffer a fracture related to Osteoporosis. Men are also not immune from this disease.

 

Common causes and risk factors are as follows:

  • An early menopause or hormonal imbalance
  • A genetic vulnerability
  • A low dietary calcium/vitamin D
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol usage

 

How to reduce the risk.

  1. Regular physical activity
  2. Adequate calcium/vitamin D dietary supplements
  3. Hormone Replacement Therapy
